Family Businesses are no different. Where it is different, is in the complexity of selecting the right board members and managing the dynamics of the family at the same time. David Karofsky, Principal with The Family Business Consulting Group and Caleb White, Principal with CFAR will run an interactive session exploring these concepts and facilitating breakout groups to dive deep into the world of Family Business Board membership.

Caleb White is a member of CFAR’s Owner-Led business practice and member of its board. Caleb’s work with family businesses is informed by his experience in his 6th generation family business, Ensign-Bickford Industries, Inc. (EBI) He is particularly attuned to high stakes shareholder issues and complex multi- generational family business dynamics. Prior to joining CFAR, Caleb was CEO of EBI, a privately held portfolio of diversified manufacturing companies, where he furthered expansion and spearheaded nearly ten acquisitions helping transform the portfolio into new areas. Caleb has deep experience with family business boards and currently serving on four: Ensign-Bickford Industries, Inc.,The Lee Company, Brokers International and Milton's Distributing. Caleb received his MBA from The Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and BA from Yale University.
Denise is currently the CFO of Koopman Lumber in Whitinsville, MA. She graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI where she majored in Accounting. After graduation she worked for Rehmann Robson, a regional accounting firm in Michigan where she earned her CPA certification. She then worked for Herman Miller in Zeeland, MI in the internal audit division. She returned to Koopman Lumber in 1996 with her husband who also started working in the business. Denise, her husband, Tony, and her brother, Dirk Koopman, make up the third-generation leadership team at Koopman Lumber. Denise lives in Whitinsville with her husband and four children. She is a member of the Board of Directors at Unibank for Savings. She also serves on the Board of Trustees and the Finance committee at Milford Regional Hospital.

David Karofsky is a principal consultant with The Family Business Consulting Group specializing in advising family businesses around the challenges and opportunities inherent to the family business. His client work is focused on building alignment around communication, executing the transition of ownership and leadership, conflict resolution, strategic planning and forming governance structures for family businesses.
