Please join the Private Directors Association for a panel discussion examining the role of the board in Governance, Risk Management and Strategy as they intersect.  This includes private companies, not-for-profits, as well as public companies.  The goal of a board is to assist management as it steers the company in the short-term toward long-term success.  This panel will discuss the aspects of these areas as it relates to today’s environment, while keeping long-term strategic goals on track.





Joyce Reto
Partner and Board Director

Joyce is currently the office managing partner for the Atlanta office and focuses on audit engagements primarily for clients in the manufacturing, retail, and consumer products industries. Joyce was elected to the RSM Board of Directors for a four-year term beginning in 2018.  She participates on the finance, M&A, and partner matters committees and chairs the strategy and innovation committee of the board.

Joyce has over 28 years of public accounting experience with RSM and Big Four firms serving public, private equity-owned and privately held companies. She brings extensive experience serving manufacturers, grocery chains, food distribution companies, retailers, restaurants, and other companies in the consumer products industry.

From 2013-2016, Joyce was the CFO of a multibillion dollar privately held grocery chain in the Southeast, which provided her experience with developing a long-term financial strategy, forecasting, budgeting, selecting and implementing an ERP system along with experience with acquisitions, real estate, incentive plans, benefits and benefit plans, investments, treasury and capital planning.


Charles Bowen
Adjunct Professor and Retired General Counsel
Georgia State University and Cox Family Office

Charles Bowen is an adjunct professor at Georgia State University College of Law, teaching innovation in the practice of law.  He recently retired as General Counsel for Cox Family Office, responsible for legal services including investments, governance, compliance, and risk management. Previously he served for 18 years as Managing Attorney for Cox Enterprises, responsible for investments, governance, knowledge management, and ethics and compliance, including service as a public company compliance officer.

Charles started his legal career as a U.S. Army JAG officer, with service in Iraq and Saudi Arabia as civil-military operations coordinator, foreign claims commissioner, and POW camp advisor.  He has served as a member of the advisory board of the Atlanta Bar Association Corporate Counsel Section and the advisory board for executive programs at the Kennesaw State University Coles College of Business. 


Mimi Thigpen
Board Director

Mimi Thigpen is a strategy and technology executive who intuitively pursues opportunities to adopt emerging technologies and disruptive business models to accelerate growth, drive competitive advantage, and increase shareholder value. While her passion is accentuating the positive side of technology, she is also vigilant that cybersecurity, data, and privacy risks are fully vetted and mitigated.

Mimi serves on the Board of Directors and Audit Committee of Globe Life (NYSE: GL), a financial service holding company headquartered in McKinney, Texas, whose affiliates market life and supplemental health insurance to middle income American families. She also serves on the board of AchieveIt, a privately held, strategic planning software company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Previously, Mimi served on the Board of Directors, the Audit Committee, and the Risk Oversight Committee of Opus Bank (Nasdaq: OPB) ), an FDIC insured California-chartered commercial bank headquartered in Irvine, California

Most recently, Mimi held equity backed CEO roles with OpsDataStore, Inc. a real-time analytics and artificial intelligence platform for IT Operations, and North Plains, Inc. a digital asset management software company.

Mimi is an active member of the Atlanta community, as a board advisor for honorCode and MBL’s Haiti Initiative.


Grady Grant III
Board Director
Aptevo Therapeutics, Inc.

Mr. Grant is an Independent Board Member currently serving on the public board of Aptevo Therapeutics (NASDAQ:APOV), a biotechnology company. He concurrently serves on the Compensation, Audit and Nominating and Corporate Governance Committees. He works closely with the CEO providing guidance for growth and to maintain compliance.

Mr. Grant is a retired Executive in Sales and Marketing, in his most recent tenure, he served as VP, Sales for Tissue Tech, a leader in regenerative amniotic tissue-based products used in ophthalmology, musculoskeletal and wound care products.

Prior to Tissue Tech, he served as VP, Medical Sales at Mead Johnson Nutrition (MJN), a pediatric nutrition provider for premature births, newborns, and toddlers.

Early in his career, Mr. Grant joined the Eli Lilly and Company organization as Brand Manager for Anti-Ulcer Products. 

Mr. Grant earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at Temple University in Philadelphia. He was a speaker at the School of Pharmacy Commencement in 2016. He completed the Executive Education Programs at Duke Fuqua School of Business and at Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Business. Additionally, he holds a Six Sigma Green Belt Certification.



Chris McDaid
Managing Director
BMO Harris Bank

Chris joined BMO in 2018 as the Commercial Banking Managing Director and Head of Diversified Industries-Georgia. He leads a team of experienced bankers focused on providing customized lending solutions and financial services to mid-sized, public, and private companies, primarily in the Southeast.

Prior to joining BMO Harris Bank, Chris s spent nearly two decades in various roles with one of the country’s largest banks.  Chris received his BA in Economics and History from the University of Florida.  He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Piedmont Park Conservancy.  He lives in the Virginia-Highlands with his wife and three sons.
