Overview

The goal of a board is to serve as an advisor to the CEO, helping to set long term goals for the company that govern its future direction and long term success. This panel discussion will examine the responsibilities and challenges of board service.  Three very experienced board members will speak from personal experience about the challenges and surprises of these roles.  They will also offer their advice to those who are seeking board roles on how to best position themselves for success.

  Lisa Kro
Chief Financial and Administrative Officer
Ryan Companies

Lisa Kro serves as the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer for Ryan Companies. She is also an independent director with multiple companies. Ms. Kro currently serves on the board of directors for Royal Neighbors of America, a fraternal insurance company, where her roles include chair of the compensation committee and member of the audit committee.  She is also a board member, chair of the audit committee and a member of the executive committee of Herman Miller, Inc. a publicly traded company.  Her previous board experience has been extensive including serving on eight private company boards, one public company board and four not for profit boards. Ms. Kro joined Ryan Companies in 2019 as their Chief Financial and Administrative Officer overseeing the accounting, human resources, legal and information technology departments.  Ryan Companies, a privately held company, is a national leader in commercial real estate services including construction, architecture, engineering, development and real estate management.  

 

Mary Brainerd
Former President and CEO

Mary Brainerd is former president and chief executive officer of Minnesota-based HealthPartners, the largest, consumer-governed, nonprofit health care organization in the nation. During Brainerd’s 15-year tenure leading the organization, HealthPartners experienced record growth and was often recognized as a national leader in the health care industry. Brainerd started her career with HealthPartners in 1992. During that time, the organization received numerous accolades for outstanding patient care, health plan service and its charitable community work. Today, HealthPartners serves more than 1.8 million medical and dental health plan members nationwide. The care system includes more than 1,700 physicians, seven hospitals, 55 primary care clinics, 19 urgent care locations and numerous specialty practices in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

 

Trudy Rautio

Trudy Rautio is an executive with 40 years of proven management and board experience in businesses of varied size and focus. She has a broad-based background which includes strategic and tactical planning; systems and human resource development; operations and analysis; organizational and board leadership. She combines excellent management and financial skills with an open, participative management style. She held a variety of roles with Carlson Companies, including serving as President and CEO for 3 years. She has served on more than 10 boards of a variety of businesses.

Anne deBruin Sample is an experienced business and HR leader, and the CEO and owner of Navigate Forward. Anne has an enviable track record of leading business-building transformation and developing top talent. Anne has engaged her passion for helping leaders find new destinations during times of transition. As both a Corporate client and an individual client of Navigate Forward, she is a strong believer in the power and impact of transition coaching and leadership development.

In her early career Anne worked in a variety of HR and strategy roles for Whirlpool, PepsiCo, Walker Digital and Citibank. She has served as the Chief HR Officer for PepsiAmericas, SVP of Management and People Solutions at Thrivent Financial, and the Chief of People at Caribou Coffee and Bagels.  She currently serves on the Board of Directors of MyMeds, a MN-based startup that provides individuals with digital health tools and real time data.
