Thomas F. O'Neil III
.

Tom O’Neil is a highly respected corporate director with broad private and public sector experience, including leadership roles in the boardrooms and C-Suites of companies in the consumer, financial services and healthcare sectors. As a compliance and risk management thought leader, Mr. O’Neil partners effectively with financial sponsors and operating teams to drive ethical and sustainable growth through disruptive innovation fueled by an inspirational culture that emphasizes diversity and inclusiveness, integrity, accountability and operational transparency with stakeholders. An adept communicator, Mr. O’Neil thrives in high-growth, turnaround, restructuring and crisis settings. During a distinguished career spanning several decades, he has developed an exceptional track record of accelerating cultural transformation and restoring trust with regulators, enforcement officials and investors. He has chaired the Audit and Risk Oversight; Ethics, Compliance and Quality; and Nominating and Governance Committees of corporate and mutual fund boards.

In September 2021, Mr. O’Neil joined Berkeley Research Group as a Managing Director. In this role, Mr. O’Neil advises boards of directors and senior leaders on the development and successful execution of strategies to transform organizational cultures and restore trust with key stakeholders including customers, patients, investors, regulators and enforcement agencies. Previously, Mr. O’Neil was the Global Chief Compliance Officer of Cigna Corporation, a leading health service company with over 70,000 employees and approximately $160 billion in top-line revenue. He has held a number of positions in public companies, including Executive Vice Chairman, General Counsel and Secretary of WellCare Health Plans, Inc. and Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the MCI Group. Mr. O’Neil has also been a partner at two global law firms, DLA Piper LLP (US) and Hogan & Hartson (now Hogan Lovells US LLP). During his tenure at DLA Piper, he was a Joint Global Practice Group Leader and he chaired the U.S. Government Affairs Practice Group.

From 2010 through 2016, Mr. O’Neil was the founder and President of The Saranac Group LLC, a strategic consulting firm that provided healthcare governance and compliance advice to boards of directors, senior management teams and private equity firms. Saranac is now an affiliate of BRG. Earlier in his career, Mr. O’Neil served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of Maryland, a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Alexander Harvey II, and a legislative assistant to former Congressman Stewart B. McKinney. He received his A.B., magna cum laude, from Dartmouth College and his J.D. from Georgetown University.

As an Adjunct Professor of Law, Mr. O’Neil has taught Corporate Governance at Georgetown University. He is a former member of the school’s Board of Regents, the Board of Visitors of the Georgetown University Law Center and the Board of Trustees of the Walters Art Museum. He also served as co-chair of the Advisory Board of the Georgetown Corporate Counsel Institute.

Jennifer Buras is a Senior Partner and Co-Leader of Essex Partners, the executive career management division of Keystone Partners exclusively dedicated to serving senior executives. As a skilled executive career consultant and coach, Jennifer seeks to collaborate with clients to create a customized strategy and plan, intended to achieve both professional and personal goals, including full-time positions, corporate boards, consulting roles, business ventures, non-profit leadership, and other alternatives. Jennifer also leads the firm’s “Board Essentials” program, designed to educate and prepare clients interested in pursuing corporate board roles. As a former retained executive search professional, Jennifer has extensive market knowledge and experience in the field of executive assessment and talent management, having advised corporate clients seeking senior executives.

Prior to joining Essex Partners, Jennifer worked for a “top 5" global executive search firm, where she was a founding member of the Boston office. In her role as Principal, Jennifer consulted to clients in the financial services industry, assessed leadership teams, and advised corporate clients seeking senior executives. Previously, Jennifer spent 10 years in the banking industry with First Chicago and BankBoston. As a Director in the Media and Communications Group of BankBoston, she cultivated relationships with executive management teams, providing debt, treasury and investment banking products and services. She began her career at Price Waterhouse, as a senior consultant and CPA in the firm’s small business practice group.

Jennifer is a Non-Executive Director of North Shore Bank where she chairs the Compensation Committee and is a member of the Audit and Security Committees. She also serves as Chair of the YMCA of the North Shore Board of Directors. Jennifer is a member of The Boston Club, a women’s leadership organization, where she serves on the Corporate Board Committee and co-leads the Directors’ Circle. She is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (“NACD”) and the American College of Corporate Directors (“ACCD”).

Jennifer holds an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management and a BBA in Accounting from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts. She was awarded a “Certificate of Completion for the External Coach Intensive,” as part of the Columbia Coaching Certification Program. She is certified in the MBTI, Hogan, MRG (LEA and LEA 360, IDI, Personal Directions) and Retirement Options assessments.
