The Disruptive Force of Artificial Intelligence and Implications for Governance
Three-Part Event Series

Overview:

Session Two: AI
Economists argue AI will affect how we work and the work we do in ways comparable, if not greater, than the impact of the internet itself. Markets will change alongside the workplace. This session will explore the disruptive opportunities for applying AI in internal and external facing areas of the organization. While management owns identifying and capitalizing on opportunities, Board Directors can be instrumental in the chaotic market situations that AI will create. This session will help Board members ask the right questions and deal effectively with both opportunities and uncertainty around regulations and the technology itself.

Ashwin Rangan
Corporate Director and Chief Information Officer
ICANN

Ashwin Rangan is an award-winning senior executive, whose experience spans 30+ years in a variety of high-tech Industry-verticals (Aerospace & Defense, PCs, Semiconductors, e-Commerce, Cloud Analytics, Advanced Medical Devices and Internet Infrastructure). He is a globally respected expert in CyberSec and GenAI. Ash is a clear-eyed businessman who balances technology, markets, investments, risks and returns.

Ash first served on the Board of a publicly-traded SPAC – PiVX (acquired by The Lotus Fund in 2005). Next, he served on the Board of Integrien (acquired by VMWare in 2010). Later, Ash served on the Board of MarketShare (acquired by Neustar, a TransUnion company) in 2015. Currently, he serves on the Board of GrandPad.

Until recently, Ash served as SVP Engineering and Chief Information Officer of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN. ICANN is responsible globally and uniquely for the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet. Ash led ICANN’s global Engineering team since joining in 2014. His team instrumented the transition of ICANN oversight from the US Government to a global multi-stakeholder governance model. Ash oversaw the expansion of the namespace of the Internet from ~300 top-level domain names (e.g., .edu, .com, .gov etc) to well over 1500 names, a 5X growth. His team engineered the Internet infrastructure backplane to support global user-count growth from under 2.5 Billion to over 5 Billion users. ICANN funding grew profitably by more than 2X during this period. Ash served as executive co-Sponsor for the Board Technology Committee, and frequently addressed the Board Risk and Board Finance Committees. Currently serving as Advisor to the CEO, Ash spearheads ICANN’s emergent GenerativeAI strategies.

Prior to joining ICANN, Ash held global leadership positions in Edwards Lifesciences, Neustar/MarketShare, Walmart, Conexant Systems and Rockwell International. Among the highlights of Ash’s prior leadership are (1) enabling the global product launch of Edwards’ breakthrough SAPIEN Transcatheter Heart Valve; (2) developing and launching MarketShare’s Cloud-based Marketing Modeling solutions; (3) leading walmart.com from an e-Commerce startup to over $1 Billion in revenue and profitability within 24 months; and (4) spinningoff Conexant Systems from Rockwell International with a market-cap of over $1 Billion. Each of these was a new benchmark for value-creation in that Industry vertical at the time.

Ash is a member of the Corporate Directors Roundtable of Orange County (www.cdroc.com) and the National Association for Corporate Directors (NACD). He graduated at the top of his class from Bangalore University, India, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering Design. Ash is a Distinguished Alumnus from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM). He is extensively credentialed, notably with Certificates in GenerativeAI from MIT, CyberSec Policy from Harvard Kennedy School, and with the NACD CyberSecurity CERT from Carnegie Mellon.
